The Genesis G80 is a front- or four-wheel drive premium business-class sedan (or, in other words, "E-segment" by European standards), which, according to the South Korean automaker itself, ideally balances elegance, luxury and sportiness ... This car is addressed to first of all, wealthy people who do not accept compromises in terms of comfort or safety, but also not inclined to blindly chase fashion and overpay for the brand.

The Genesis G80 premium sedan of the second generation (but if we count the predecessor with the Hyundai logo, then the third one) with the in-plant marking "RG3" was officially presented to the general public on March 30, 2020 as part of a live online broadcast from the company's headquarters in South Korea.

After the "reincarnation", the four-door was radically transformed both outside and inside, moved to a fundamentally new "rear-wheel drive" platform, practically unchanged in size, but "losing weight" by more than a centner, "armed" with modern turbo engines and acquired a large number of progressive options.

The exterior of the "second" Genesis G80 is tailored in the new family style of the premium brand called Athletic Elegance, and I must say that the car really boasts an elegant, monumental, noble and sporty fit "physique".

The solid front of the three-volume box flaunts stylish "two-story" optics, a huge "hexagon" of the radiator grille with a honeycomb pattern and a sculptural bumper, and its elegant stern contains, again, "two-story" LED-lights and a "chubby" bumper with a pair of shaped exhaust pipes systems.

In profile, the car is more reminiscent of a fastback due to the classic silhouette with a long hood, the interior shifted back, a sloping roof line and a heavily littered rear window, smoothly "flowing" into the short tail of the trunk, and a powerful shoulder line and impressive arches add to its presentability wheels.

The length of the Genesis G80 of the second generation is 4995 mm, of which the distance between the wheelsets extends to 3010 mm, its width is 1925 mm, and the height is 1465 mm. The curb weight of the three-volume tank varies from 1785 to 1965 kg, depending on the modification.

Interior

Inside, the "second" Genesis G80 meets a beautiful and "thoroughbred" design with a minimum number of physical buttons, exclusively premium finishing materials and high quality workmanship. Directly in front of the driver is a stylish multifunctional "steering wheel" with a four-spoke rim and fully digital instrumentation based on a widescreen 12.3-inch display, and a 14.5-inch touchscreen of the media center sticks out in the center of the massive front panel, under which there are stylish ventilation deflectors and a modern microclimate unit.

According to the passport, the salon of the business sedan has a five-seater layout, but in fact the second row is more suitable for two passengers, and all because of the shape of the sofa and the high floor tunnel.

At the front, there are ergonomic seats with an optimal side profile, a large number of electric adjustments, heating and ventilation, which can be replaced with multicontour seats with pneumatic chambers.

Behind - a comfortable sofa with a folding center armrest, its own climate control, heating, sun blinds on the windows and a pair of monitors of the infotainment complex.

How spacious the car's cargo compartment is is not yet officially reported, but according to preliminary data, its volume is about 450 liters. Regardless of the version, the four-door is equipped with a boot lid servo.

Specifications

For the Genesis G80, three engines are declared to choose from, which by default are combined with an 8-band hydromechanical "automatic" and rear-wheel drive transmission, and as an option - with an all-wheel drive system with a multi-disc clutch for connecting the front axle:

  • The first option is a 2.5-liter T-GDI four-cylinder petrol engine with an aluminum block and a cylinder head, combined fuel injection, a turbocharger, a liquid intercooler, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt and phase shifters at the inlet and outlet, generating 304 horsepower at 5800 rpm minute and 422 Nm of torque at 1650-4000 rpm.
  • Under the hood of the "top" versions is a 3.5-liter T-GDI aluminum petrol "six" with turbocharging, a combined "power supply" system, a liquid intercooler, a 32-valve timing and variable valve timing, which produces 380 hp. at 5800 rpm and 530 Nm of peak thrust at 1300-4500 rpm.
  • The diesel vehicles are equipped with a four-cylinder 2.2-liter unit with an aluminum block, a turbocharger, Common Rail fuel injection and a 16-valve timing belt, which develops 210 hp. at 3800 rpm and 441 Nm of torque at 1750-2750 rpm.
Design features

The second "release" Genesis G80 is built on a new rear-wheel drive "bogie" with a classic layout with a longitudinal engine layout, main rear-wheel drive and a monocoque body, which consists of 42% of ultra-high-strength steel and 19% of aluminum.

By default, the sedan is equipped with fully independent suspensions with conventional springs and shock absorbers and anti-roll bars: on the front axle - McPherson struts, on the rear - a multi-link system.

As an option, the four-door relies on an adaptive chassis with electronically controlled shock absorbers that change stiffness based on data from the front camera (which, in turn, scans the roadway in front of the car).

The machine is equipped with a gear-rack-type steering system with an active electric amplifier. "In a circle" three-volume boasts ventilated disc brakes, working in conjunction with ABS, EBD and other modern "gadgets".
