KIA Carnival is a full-size front-wheel drive minivan, which is positioned in the South Korean company as a representative of a "new class" called GUV (Grand Utility Vehicle), as if hinting at its "crossover orientation". According to the developers, this car combines the comfort and spaciousness of a minivan with the dynamics and character of an urban crossover, and is aimed primarily at progressive young families with several children ...

For the first time, the fourth generation KIA Carnival was presented to the world community at the end of June 2020 during an online presentation, but only a month later the Koreans fully declassified its technical characteristics.

After the generation change, the car radically changed in appearance, following the lead of the crossover fashion and getting "off-road" features in the exterior, slightly enlarged in size, acquired a modern and practical interior decoration, and also "armed" with a completely redrawn technical "stuffing".

Outside, the "fourth" KIA Carnival instantly catches the eye with its attractive, balanced, monumental and austere design. Full face, the car flaunts original lighting equipment with complex breaks in the navigation lights and high beam sections embedded in a wide radiator grille, and a massive bumper, while its sheer stern is decorated with stylish full-width lights, a large tailgate and a compact bumper.

From the side, the car "flaunts" a majestic two-volume silhouette, in which "off-road" genes are immediately traced - a clearly pronounced separate hood, windshield pillars shifted back and textured wheel arches that accommodate "rollers" measuring 18 or 19 inches.

Size and weight

This is a full-size minivan: it stretches 5155 mm in length, of which 3090 mm is the distance between the wheelsets of the front and rear axles, reaches 1995 mm in width and does not exceed 1750 mm in height.

The ground clearance of the monocab is 182 mm, and its curb weight varies from 2065 to 2095 kg, depending on the modification.

Interior

The interior of KIA Carnival of the fourth incarnation looks beautiful, modern and very presentable, with a slight hint of "premium" (at least visually), and the main emphasis here is placed on two widescreen 12.3-inch screens each, placed under a single glass: the left one encloses itself functions of the dashboard, while the right manages the infotainment capabilities. Neither the weighty multifunctional steering wheel with a three-spoke rim, nor the elegant "microclimate" control panel with touch-sensitive keys stand out from the general style.

For the fourth generation KIA Carnival in Russia, two options for the layout of the cabin are announced - for eight or seven seats, and the front riders always rely on ergonomic seats with an unobtrusive side profile and wide adjustment ranges, and a non-alternative three-seater sofa is installed on the "gallery", divided in a proportion of 60 : 40.

As for the middle row, it can be presented in two forms: three separate seats with adjustment in the longitudinal direction, or two "captain" seats with armrests, heating, electric drive and ventilation.

Even with a seven- / eight-seater cabin layout, the minivan has an impressive trunk - in this case, its volume is 627 liters.

The third-row sofa folds down in a 60:40 ratio and is completely hidden in the floor, and the maximum capacity of the load compartment of the car reaches 2905 liters.

Specifications

For the fourth generation KIA Carnival, there are two engines to choose from, belonging to the Smartstream family, each of which is combined with an 8-band hydromechanical "automatic" and front-wheel drive transmission:

  • The first option is a 3.5-liter GDI V-six with direct fuel injection, 24-valve timing and variable valve timing, generating 249 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 332 Nm of torque at 5200 rpm.
  • The second is a four-cylinder 2.2-liter diesel with in-line architecture, turbocharging, common rail injection and 16-valve DOHC timing belt, which produces 199 hp. at 3800 rpm and 440 Nm of peak thrust at 1750-2750 rpm.
Dynamics, speed and consumption

From standstill to 100 km / h, this Korean minivan accelerates after 8.5-10.7 seconds, and its maximum speed does not exceed 190 km / h.

If we talk about fuel consumption, then the petrol versions require an average of 10.3 liters of fuel for every "hundred" of the mileage in combined mode, and the diesel - 6.5 liters.

Design features

At the heart of the fourth generation KIA Carnival is the platform of the Hyundai-KIA concern, called N3 - it implies a transverse arrangement of the power plant and the presence of a monocoque body made with abundant use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel grades.

Both front and rear, the car is supplied with independent suspensions with passive shock absorbers, conventional springs and lateral stabilizers: in the first case - classic McPherson struts, in the second - a multi-link system.

By default, the minivan has a rack and pinion steering system and an active electric power steering. "In a circle" the car boasts disc brakes (ventilated on the front axle), working together with ABS, EBD and other modern technologies.
